When your breathing is not working as it should
Breathlessness, a tight throat or a feeling of not getting enough air can occur in people with and without asthma. It may be related to EILO, a dysfunctional breathing pattern or a combination. Such complaints can be felt both in everyday life and during physical activity, even when lung function is normal.
What breathing guidance may include
- Analysis of your breathing pattern at rest and during activity
- Mapping what triggers your symptoms
- Working towards a more functional breathing pattern
- Tailored guidance for better breathing control in everyday life and during training
The guidance is tailored to you and can be a supplement for EILO, dysfunctional breathing and asthma where symptoms are not well enough controlled. It does not replace assessment or treatment by a doctor.
What is EILO?
EILO (Exercise Induced Laryngeal Obstruction) means that the larynx narrows during physical exertion, especially when you breathe in. EILO can occur on its own or together with asthma. Common signs are:
- Tightness in the throat
- A wheezing sound (stridor) when breathing in
- Sudden breathlessness at high intensity
- Symptoms ease quickly when you stop
- Asthma medication helps little
What is dysfunctional breathing?
Dysfunctional breathing means that breathing is not used efficiently, even though the lungs are healthy. Typical signs are:
- A feeling of not being able to fill your lungs
- Shallow or laboured breathing
- Tension in the chest, neck or throat
- Reduced endurance and breathing control
Who provides the guidance?
Breathing guidance is provided by Sylvi Sommer, a physiologist with a master’s degree in sports medicine from the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (NIH). As a respiratory physiologist she has worked with patients with asthma, EILO, VCD and dysfunctional breathing. The guidance builds on a holistic understanding of breathing, load and symptoms. The aim is better function, more confidence and breathing that supports your activity rather than limiting it.
